Why Practice Tests Are Essential
Knowing Russian and performing well in a Russian examination are related but distinct skills. The TORFL examination is a specific, structured test with particular task types, time constraints and assessment criteria. A candidate who has excellent Russian but has never practiced under timed examination conditions will consistently underperform compared to their actual ability level. Conversely, a candidate who knows the examination format intimately and has practised extensively under realistic conditions will perform at or above their true ability level.
Practice tests serve three critical functions in exam preparation. First, they familiarise you with the task formats so you are not wasting valuable examination time figuring out what is being asked of you. Second, they build examination stamina — TORFL examinations are mentally tiring, and practising under timed conditions conditions your brain to sustain focus for the required duration. Third, they diagnose your weak areas accurately: your performance on practice tests tells you exactly where to focus your remaining preparation time, which is far more valuable information than vague impressions of what you find "difficult".
The Pravda Russian practice test library provides authentic-style materials for all TORFL levels from A1 through B2, modelled closely on official examination specifications and calibrated to the same difficulty level as real TORFL tasks. Each practice set includes a full answer key and, for writing and speaking components, assessment rubrics and sample high-scoring responses.

How to Use Practice Tests Effectively
Always time yourself
Never do practice tests without a timer. Examination pressure is real — your brain performs differently when time is running out. Practice under realistic conditions from the first mock test.
Complete each subtest fully before checking answers
Do not check your answers mid-subtest. Complete the entire test as you would in a real examination, then review. This gives you accurate data on your examination-condition performance.
Analyse every wrong answer in detail
For each incorrect answer, identify whether the error was a knowledge gap (you did not know the rule), a careless mistake (you knew but misread), or a genuine uncertainty. Each type requires a different remedy.
Track your scores over time
Record your practice test scores in a simple table. Seeing improvement week on week is powerfully motivating. A score that stays flat tells you something is wrong with your study approach and requires a change of strategy.
Do your final mock exam three to five days before the real test
Leave enough time after the final mock to address specific weaknesses but not so much time that anxiety about your mock score derails your preparation. The night before: rest, not revision.
The official TORFL practice materials published by St Petersburg State University Press (Санкт-Петербургский государственный университет) are available through Russian bookshops and academic suppliers worldwide. They include complete model examinations with answer keys and audio for all five levels. These are the gold standard reference for calibrating your preparation — Pravda Russian practice materials are designed to complement, not replace, the official publications.
